Indian teacher jailed in fake sex sting gets bail
11 09 2007An Indian teacher sent to jail after a television station ran a story that she forced her students into prostitution was granted bail Monday, within days of the arrest of the journalist for allegedly cooking up the news report that sparked fury in New Delhi.
Delhi’s additional chief metropolitan magistrate Alok Agrawal allowed Uma Khurana’s release on a personal bond of 5000 Rs.,
The court also issued a warrant for production of arrested reporter Prakash Singh, the news report said.
In his story, police say, Singh, a reporter with Live India TV station, showed an aspiring journalist posing as a student and accusing Khurana of pushing schoolgirls into prostitution.
Authorities in Delhi sacked Khurana from job after she was almost lynched by angry parents and residents as soon as they saw the so-called sting operation on Live India.
The TV story, which police now believe was staged, has triggered a debate in India over television journalism ethics and use of undercover means in reporting.
