The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a showcause notice to the health ministry and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) over the deaths of 49 infants during clinical trials, even as the nationally renowned institution defended the experiments.

“This is a showcause notice. We have sought comments from the secretary of the health ministry and the AIIMS director on a complaint filed with the NHRC within four weeks,” a commission official said.Rahul Verma of the NGO ‘Uday Foundation’ had submitted a petition to the NHRC, alleging violation of right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution.

In a statement, the institute said the drugs used in the tests were safe and the children were not selected from a particular socio-economic group. It added that none of the 49 deaths were due to the treatment modalities under trial. The drugs studied had been found safe in earlier studies, and were not known to have fatal complications. In fact, the deaths were due to high risk and serious disease conditions which the children suffered from.

A new upstart intending to compete head-on with the Google behemoth, has launched today.

The firm named ‘Cuil’ but pronounced ‘cool’ apparently, is formed of previous Google engineers, and intends to out-do Google at what it does best.

The new company is offering a new search engine at www.cuil.com that it claims can index faster and cheaper, a larger portion of the world-wide wibble than current leader, Google.

Called Cuil, from the Gaelic for knowledge and hazel, its founders claim it does a better and more comprehensive job of indexing information online.

The technology it uses to index the web can understand the context surrounding each page and the concepts driving search requests, say the founders.

But analysts believe the new search engine, like many others, will struggle to match and defeat Google.

Hard fight

Cuil, pronounced “cool”, says it uses more than 120 billion webpages to build up its index of the information it finds on the web.

It claims this is more than Google uses though the search giant has stopped reporting how much it indexes. Without revealing numbers Google claimed its index was still bigger.

Cuil claims that its technology moves away from the methods that have driven Google’s success.

Instead of just looking at the number and quality of links to and from a webpage as Google’s technology does, Cuil attempts to understand more about the information on a page and the terms people use to search. Results are displayed in a magazine format rather than a list.

The company is also trying to set itself apart from Google by not retaining any information about what people search for.

Bollywood is amazed at the sudden change of heart of Aamir Khan. Initially, he tried to mend relations with the media and now, all of a sudden he invites all the bigwigs of B-Town including rival Shah Rukh and the Bachchan clan to the premiere of JTYJN.

News has it that the ‘perfectionist’ Khan is wooing all his ‘enemies’, and is donning a super-friendly avatar. He is hosting the premiere of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, the launchpad of his nephew, Imran Khan. The film is to hit the theatres on 4th July.

Big B and Aamir had a tiff, when the latter commented adversely at big B’s ‘Black’, comparing it with his TZP. Aamir shared that he felt the movie ‘Black’ to be very manipulative, the actor said that no parent in the real world would be ready to leave the child alone with an alcoholic for 40 days. This did not go well with the Big B. But now, Aamir has invited the entire Bachchan clan for the premiere.

Aamir began a blog tirade against SRK, when he said that his housekeeper has a dog named Shah Rukh, who has been licking his feet. A lot of hullabaloo was made over his blog entry, but the actor said that it was done in jest and he meant no harm. SRK displayed no ill-will against the other Khan.

Aamir’s premiere party will see his former foes like Akshaye khanna and Ram Gopal Varma. Gossip has it that Ramu and Aamir had a squabble during the making of ‘Rangeela’, while Akshaye-Aamir had a tiff during the shoot of ‘DCH’.

The star is also said to have personally invited Tamil super star Rajinikanth and good friend. Salman Khan. The ‘perfectionist’ Khan is personally looking after the details of the premiere party that will see over 2000 guests including the ‘who’s who of Bollywood’.

‘Mr Sixer’ Yuvraj Singh is dating Bollywood’s latest heartthrob Deepika Padukone, sources close to the families say.

Bollywood heartthrob Deepika Padukone and the dashing Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh were spotted at a popular Sydney restaurant having a gala time together.

According to the grapevine, Deepika flew down to Sydney on Wednesday after Yuvi sent out a special invite for his latest love interest to catch him in action during the ongoing India-Australia test series. Some sources are also adding fuel to the love-fire by stating that it was Yuvi who sponsored her entire trip to Australia. Meanwhile, Deepika’s Publicist; Atul Kasbekar has refused to comment on the matter, neither accepting nor denying the statement.

Sources close to Deepika have said that she has gone there to shoot for a Yashraj film.

It now seems that taking part in the shooting for Yash Raj Films is a mere excuse, and the real reason is that ‘Om Shanti Om’ heroine Deepika Padukone is in Australia to cheer her “close friend” Yuvraj Singh, who is struggling along with his team mates to battle the mighty Aussies led by Ricky Ponting.

If this sounds unbelievable, read this. Though the month-long shooting for the Yash Raj Flims’ next venture commences on Australian soil on from January 7, the actress left Mumbai two days in advance just to have Yuvraj by her side while celebrating her 22nd birthday on January 5!

Despite not winning the reality dance show Nach Baliye, Item girl Rakhi Sawant and her boyfriend Abhishek Awasthi continue to be in the news.

However, the recent walkout that she staged after Sanjeeda and Aamir Ali were declared winners of ‘Nach Baliye 3′, in which Rakhi and her partner, Abhishek, were finalists, cost whatever little sympathy she had from the audience and the media.

To add to the drama, she did not collect the runners-up trophy from Salman Khan, who was there as the celebrity judge.

The way she suddenly burst into tears shocked both the people on stage, and the audience. Rakhi accused the channel, STAR Plus, of partiality, and said that the programme should be renamed ‘STAR Baliye’, since only actors who work with STAR win.

You can like her, you can hate her but you can’t ignore her. Rakhi Sawant, the famous Bollywood item girl, is back in the news. This time she has targetted Star TV. The famous reality dance show, Nach Baliye 3, in which she lost, came to an end last week but Rakhi still wants to be in the limelight. Rakhi Sawant has lodged a complaint with the Mumbai police that the television channel has adopted fraudulent measures to ensure her defeat in the finals of the reality show.

However, the case in question seems like one of a bad loser. The sensational criminal complaint has prompted the Mumbai Police Crime Branch to probe into the allegations made by the oomph girl.

In her complaint Rakhi alleged that Star Plus had deliberately stopped her from winning the show by sending bogus SMS votes in favour of her opponents (Sanjeeda Shaikh and Aamir Ali) from cyber cafes across the city.

Sawant also alleged that the channel had blocked the SMSes in her favour and was trying to promote its own shows by ensuring victory of those who act in them.

The Intelligence Bureau has warned that the national Capital may witness terror attacks within the next two weeks. And in a bid to catch the security apparatus off-guard, the attacks may be carried out after the festival season.

The Indian Intelligence Bureau (IB) has informed Delhi Police Commissioner Y. S. Dadwal that markets and crowded areas may be targeted by LeT and HUJI, a city police official told reporters here Monday.

The intelligence inputs suggest that militants of the Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in connivance with Bangladeshi terror outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-e-Islami (HuJI) were hatching a conspiracy to target Delhi, the official said on condition of anonymity.

The Delhi Police says it is gearing up to deal with the threat. Bomb Disposal Squads and quick reaction teams have been put on the alert. Extra battalions of local police and dog squads will be deployed at important places.

Meanwhile, vigil has also been increased on Delhi’s entry points, with Delhi Police officials maintaining a close coordination with their counterparts of neighbouring states.

To pre-empt any possible attack, a close watch is being kept at cyber cafes and their owners have been asked to maintain a list of their customers along with server logs.

Dealers providing mobile phone connections have also been asked to maintain a list of their customers.

As Internet and cell phones are being used by the insurgents to communicate, Delhi police have asked cyber cafe owners to maintain not only customer details but server logs, too. Dealers providing mobile connections were also asked to maintain a list of their customers.

An Indian teacher sent to jail after a television station ran a story that she forced her students into prostitution was granted bail Monday, within days of the arrest of the journalist for allegedly cooking up the news report that sparked fury in New Delhi.

Delhi’s additional chief metropolitan magistrate Alok Agrawal allowed Uma Khurana’s release on a personal bond of 5000 Rs.,
The court also issued a warrant for production of arrested reporter Prakash Singh, the news report said.

In his story, police say, Singh, a reporter with Live India TV station, showed an aspiring journalist posing as a student and accusing Khurana of pushing schoolgirls into prostitution.

Authorities in Delhi sacked Khurana from job after she was almost lynched by angry parents and residents as soon as they saw the so-called sting operation on Live India.

The TV story, which police now believe was staged, has triggered a debate in India over television journalism ethics and use of undercover means in reporting.
